How many grass carp for weed control?

Grass carp are a vegetation tool, not part of your fishery. Rates are per surface acre — not per weedy acre — and they vary more between states than almost anything else on this page, so read the numbers as a bracket rather than an answer.

Check your state before you order. The rules genuinely differ: Texas and Virginia allow only sterile triploid fish and require a permit before purchase, while Oklahoma allows triploids with no permit at all. Some states prohibit grass carp outright. Virginia caps permits at 15 fish per acre and will not permit them for a brand-new pond. Your state wildlife agency, or a certified triploid dealer licensed in your state, will know which rule applies to you.

How the pond math works

Volume: surface area × average depth gives cubic feet; multiply by 7.48 for gallons. The trick is average depth — ponds aren't swimming pools. On a typical embankment farm pond (max depth measured at the dam), average depth runs about 40% of maximum depth — the approximation Alabama Extension uses; the steeper/gradual presets are our planning heuristics. One acre-foot (an acre, one foot deep) is 325,851 gallons.

Before treating your pond with chemicals: many water-column treatments are dosed from acre-feet, but others use surface acres, concentration, or spot-treatment area — always follow the product label. And don't use a rough profile estimate for products with a narrow safety margin; measure actual average depth first.

Stocking: the Southeastern extension baseline for a balanced largemouth bass–bluegill fishery in a new, unfertilized pond is 50 bass + 500 total bream per surface acre (commonly 350 bluegill + 150 redear sunfish), stocking the sunfish in fall and the bass the following spring so the forage base is established first. Channel catfish are optional at 25–50/acre and usually need restocking as they're caught. A managed fertilization program supports higher rates — Alabama Extension publishes 75–100 bass, 1,000 bream and 50–100 catfish per acre — but supplemental feeding alone does not justify them.

State recommendations vary. Northern states with shorter growing seasons often recommend different species mixes (e.g., adding fathead minnows, skipping fertilization). Your state wildlife agency or extension fisheries specialist publishes a free stocking guide — worth a read before you order fish.

How many gallons is a 1 acre pond? (and other common sizes)

This is the question almost everyone arrives with, and the honest answer is that acres alone can't tell you — an acre describes the surface, not the water. What settles it is average depth. Each surface acre holds 325,851 gallons per foot of average depth, so the table below is just that number multiplied out. Find your surface acres down the left, your average depth across the top.

The mistake to avoid: people plug in the depth at the dam. On a typical bowl-shaped farm pond the average is closer to 40% of the maximum, so a pond with 10 ft at the dam usually belongs in the "4 ft avg" column, not the "8 ft" one — a difference of well over a million gallons on a single acre. If a treatment or an aerator is riding on the number, go measure: run a rope across the pond, sound the depth at even intervals, and average the readings.

How much lime does a pond need?

Lime is the cheapest thing most pond owners aren't doing. Water that is too soft — total alkalinity below 20 mg/L — won't hold a fertilizer response, and Mississippi State Extension notes that such ponds "do not respond well to fertilization and should be limed in the fall before springtime fertilization is initiated." Alabama Extension puts the working rate at two or more tons of agricultural limestone per surface acre, and recommends late fall and winter as the application window, when an oxygen crash is least likely.

Two points that trip people up. First, lime is dosed per surface acre, not per acre-foot — it's the bottom mud you're treating, not the water column, so depth doesn't enter into it. Second, two tons is a floor rather than a prescription: a bottom-mud test through your county extension office returns a pond-specific lime requirement that is frequently higher. Alabama's guidance is to spread from a barge on anything but the smallest ponds; under about three acres you can often work from the bank if a power spreader can reach several points around the shoreline. Retest alkalinity every couple of years, because lime gradually washes through.

Don't lime and fertilize in the same breath. The sequence matters — lime in fall or winter, let alkalinity come up, then fertilize the following spring if you're managing for a heavier fish crop. Fertilizing soft water first mostly wastes the fertilizer.

How big a watershed does the pond need?

A pond is only as reliable as the land feeding it, and this is the number most often guessed wrong on a new build. It is also genuinely regional — it tracks rainfall, soil and land cover, so use your own state's figure rather than a national one:

Undersize the watershed and the pond spends late summer dropping away from the bank. Oversize it and you have a different problem: every heavy rain drives more water at the spillway and the dam than they were built for, along with more silt and more runoff-borne nutrients. Missouri Extension's construction targets are worth holding alongside this — an average depth around 5 to 6 feet, no point deeper than roughly 10 to 12 feet, at least half the pond in the 4–5 ft range, and banks that drop quickly to 3 feet so shallow shelves don't turn into a weed bed.

Hybrid bluegill: what you are actually buying

Hybrid sunfish — usually a bluegill male crossed with a green sunfish female, sold as "hybrid bluegill" — get recommended constantly for small ponds, and the reason is real: they grow fast, they hit anything, and they do not stunt the way a pond full of straight bluegill will. The reason they do not stunt is the interesting part. The cross throws roughly 90 percent males, so there simply are not enough females to produce the wall-to-wall spawn that turns a bluegill pond into a pond of four-inch fish.

They are not sterile, though, and that matters. The females that do turn up breed back to bluegill or green sunfish, and the offspring lose the hybrid vigour you paid for — bigger heads, slower growth, and eventually a pond that looks like any other crowded panfish pond. Every published program therefore has a restocking step built into it. Mississippi State restocks 3–4 inch fingerlings once 50 to 70 percent of the original stock has been caught out; Oklahoma replaces brood sunfish every five years. A hybrid pond is a pond you keep re-stocking, and if that is not a commitment you want, straight bluegill is the lower-maintenance answer.

The rates diverge more than you would expect for something this widely recommended:

Both programs stock bass, and both treat the bass as a tool rather than a crop: Oklahoma says do not harvest bass for three years, then run a 12- or 14-inch minimum length limit; Mississippi State says put the bass back and keep the sunfish. Mississippi State also caps the whole program at ponds of three acres or smaller and treats a feed of at least 28 percent protein as part of it, not an optional extra.

The catch nobody mentions at the feed store. Because hybrids reproduce so little, they never make enough small fish to feed a bass population — so the bass in a hybrid pond stay small. Missouri specifically warns against substituting hybrids for bluegill when you are stocking a new bass pond. If you want bass, stock bluegill. If you want a lot of hand-sized panfish off a dock and you will run a feeder, hybrids are the better fish.

Grass carp: read this before you order any

Grass carp are the most consequential fish you can put in a small pond, because they are the one you cannot take back out. They live five to eleven years in a typical pond, so an overstocked pond stays overstocked for most of a decade. Everything below follows from that.

Rates are per surface acre, not per weedy acre. Every source checked is consistent on this, and it is the single most common mistake — someone with a two-acre pond and half an acre of weeds stocks for the half acre and wonders why nothing happened. Beyond that, the published rates disagree by a factor of five or more, and the disagreement is real rather than sloppy: it tracks growing season, plant species, and how aggressively each state wants to limit a fish it regulates.

Texas A&M publishes a general 7 to 15 per acre and adds the line most worth remembering: grass carp seldom control vegetation in the first year. Virginia sets a floor of three fish for ponds under an acre, because one or two carp in a pond is not a treatment. And stocking size matters — put in fish over 8 inches if you have bass in the 10 to 12 inch range, or the bass eat your weed control; 4 inches is the absolute floor even where nothing can eat them.

They are picky eaters. Grass carp will not touch woody-stemmed plants, so lily pads and cattails are safe from them, and duckweed and watermeal are not readily eaten either. Larger grass carp stop eating filamentous algae, so if pond scum is your problem you want smaller fish and higher numbers — Oklahoma runs 30 to 60 per acre of smaller fish for filamentous algae specifically. If those are the plants you are fighting, grass carp may simply be the wrong tool.

Under-stock on purpose. Strip every plant out of a pond and you trade a weed problem for muddy water and worse fishing — the vegetation was holding sediment down and hiding young fish. Start below the rate you think you need, give it a season or two, and add more if you have to. That is the one decision here you can still reverse.

Frequently asked questions

Why does volume matter? Many pond treatments — most herbicides, and copper products — are dosed by volume in acre-feet, while lime and fertilizer are dosed by surface acre. Aeration systems are sized by volume and depth. Getting the wrong one wastes money at best and kills fish at worst, so read the label to see which unit it wants before you buy anything.

When should I stock? The proven sequence: bluegill/redear (and fathead minnows) in fall, largemouth bass the following spring. Stocking forage fish first lets them grow and reproduce before bass arrive, greatly reducing the risk of an imbalanced population.

How much dirt is that? The volume calculator reports excavation in cubic yards as well as gallons, which is the unit an excavator will quote in. A one-acre pond at 6 ft average depth is roughly 9,700 cubic yards of material — useful as a sanity check on a bid, though a real build also moves dirt for the dam, the core trench and the spillway, so treat it as a floor rather than a total.

My pond is muddy and won't clear. Is that a lime problem? Sometimes, partly. Persistent clay turbidity is its own topic with its own treatments, but low alkalinity is a common companion to it, and a mud test tells you about both at once. Start with the test rather than with a product.

Are hybrid bluegill sterile? No, and that is the most repeated myth about them. The bluegill-male by green-sunfish-female cross produces roughly 90 percent males, which is why they do not overpopulate and stunt the way straight bluegill do — but the females that do occur breed back to bluegill or green sunfish, and the offspring lose the growth advantage. That is why every state program includes a restocking step rather than treating the pond as self-sustaining.

How many grass carp do I need per acre? Somewhere between 2 and 30 per surface acre depending on how weedy the pond is and which state you are in, and the spread is not a rounding error — Virginia's permit-capped ladder runs 2, 5, 10 and 15 per acre by infestation level, while Oklahoma runs 5 to 15 for light growth and 15 to 30 for heavy. Use the rate per surface acre, not per weedy acre, and start at the low end, because grass carp live 5 to 11 years and you cannot un-stock a pond.
