Method: Penn State Extension, "Calibration of Grain/Seed Drills" — working width = spacing × openers; rate = lb ÷ acres covered. Their example (2.3 lb over 200 ft with a 10-ft drill = 50 lb/ac) is one of this page's automated tests. Reviewed July 2026

Getting a rate you can trust

Collect seed either by driving a measured distance or by jacking up the drive wheel and turning it the number of revolutions that equals that distance (revolutions = distance ÷ wheel circumference). Catch the seed in bags or a tarp, weigh it, and the math is: acres covered = working width × distance ÷ 43,560, then rate = pounds ÷ acres. If you only sampled some tubes, the calculator scales up by (total openers ÷ sampled openers) before computing.

Penn State's consistency check is worth the extra minute: weigh a few tubes individually — any opener off by 10% or more from the average is telling you a meter needs attention.

Seeding by PLS? If your target rate is in pure live seed, divide the target by (purity% × germination%) from the bag tag to get the bulk rate to calibrate for — the same math our food plot calculator uses. Coated seed: calibrate by the coated weight, but confirm the tag's PLS.

Re-check after the first pass in the field: vibration, speed, and seed lots all move the number. Small-seeded forages especially — a quarter-turn on the wrong setting can double a clover rate.
